So, here I am on Sunday morning watching Melissa Harris Perry, who I absolutely adore, and my liberal soul is hurting because I don't agree with her. I know, it's shocking, but it's true. I like to think I have a fairly good sense of humor. There isn't much that I find offensive if delivered in the context of comedy, however the Tweet on Oscar Night, sent out by the satirical paper, The Onion and referring to Quvenzhane Wallis, who's a child by the way, as a cunt, well that one even got my panties in a bunch. For me it's a "child" thing, even more so than a "female" thing. On that, MHP and I agree. What I find offensive about her commentary today is her racial emphasis on this moment. Being called a cunt is no more or less offensive dependent on your race. Nor does it target one race above another. Trust me I know, I've been called it more than my fair share of times. This is about the sexualization of ALL female children, and the misogyny directed at ALL women. What's the opposite of MHP's opinion here? That it would be less offensive to a white child? That because a white, female child doesn't face the added burden of racial tension in this country, it's not QUITE as bad? There is definite and concrete racism out there, that Miss. Wallis is going to have stand up to. That's not debatable. However, when we add racial tension to every issue, we move ourselves away from being able to have an honest conversation about race. This was a chance to have a real conversation about sexism, which is a problem that can only be solved by NOT alienating and dividing the enlightened men and women who understand that it's a societal problem. There are issues that are specific to black women, and I'd love to discuss and fix them. The use of the word cunt, however, is NOT one of them. THAT is an issue specific to WOMEN. Period. All women.
